Every Monday I will be posting a 'Weekly Music Exclusive' of R&B/HipHop/Pop/Soul.  Typically albums will be posted prior to their release date so you can get them here first!

Hazing In America

Hazing, the act of causing mental, emotional or physical harm as a part of an initiation process.

A few weeks ago news surfaced that a 26 year old member of the famed Florida A & M University 'Marching 100' band was found unresponsive aboard a charter bus outside of an Orlando hotel.  First news reports suggested there was no foul play involved, however after further investigation it was revealed that a hazing ritual had taken place prior to 911 being called.

I must admit that it makes my heart drop to see another young man die over senselessness.  Granted I have never been a part of a marching band and sure I may not understand all the perks of 'being on the other side' but I do know that at the end of the day they are still college students.  Outside of the band culture, they really reap no benefits to an outside.

According to one of my sources Robert Champion was participating in a ritual that is referred to as "Crossing Bus C." the bus typically reserved for drum majors both past and present.  In order to be initiated it is said that the participant must travel from the rear of the bus to the front while being pummeled by a gauntlet of fists, drumsticks, musical instruments, pots, pans and anything else the initiators decide to bring to the occasion.  Upon completion, the participant is then entitled to all rights and privileges that include respect from other drum majors and you guessed it, the right to ride on Bus C.

I may not be the brightest guy out there but I can weigh risk/rewards  of most situations that present themselves and it does not seem logical.  Is this where we are in America now after hundreds of years of oppression endured by our ancestors? Struggling for acceptance from our own peers and willing to risk our bodies and potentially our lives for it.  We must come to a realization true respect does not come from how much of an ass beating you can endure, but rather your actual merits.  My heart goes out to the Champion family and I do not think he is at fault by any means.  I understand the pressure of fulfilling the male bravado and the people in charge very well should have known where to draw the line and because of their failure to due so they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Who Am I?

Well, that's actually not very important in comparison to the question: "What do I have to offer?"  But for now we can stick to the basics.  I am a 22 year old black male residing in the United (really?) States of America partaking in this thing we call life and living it to the fullest.  Currently I am a graduating senior in college and taking on the world a day a time. Whatever. Here I will offer my experiences, views on several topics, write reviews and so much more.  I hope that you my find some enlightenment as well as entertainment.  Either way stay blessed.
